Deep time

How your geode was made

Every amethyst geode in our gallery began as a bubble in molten rock, in the age of the dinosaurs.

  1. c. 135–130 million years agoFire

As South America and Africa began to tear apart and the South Atlantic Ocean was born, colossal lava flows flooded what is now southern Brazil and northern Uruguay. Dinosaurs still walked the Earth.

  2. As the lava cooledHollow

Gas bubbles trapped in the thick basalt left hollow cavities. Some were small, but some were big enough for a person to stand inside.

  3. Over geological timeGrowth

Mineral-rich water seeped through the rock, lining each cavity first with a skin of agate, then with quartz crystals, one microscopic layer at a time. Geologists still debate exactly how long this took, and it is measured in spans far longer than human history.

  4. Deep in the earthColour

Traces of iron within the quartz, touched by natural radiation from the surrounding rock, slowly turned the crystals purple. The deeper and more even the colour, the rarer the geode.

  5. TodayDiscovery

Freeing a large geode intact from solid basalt is painstaking work. Only a small fraction emerge whole, with deep colour and fine crystals worthy of a gallery.

  6. Your spaceLegacy

Held in the UK, viewed with you one to one, and placed in its new home: a piece of the Earth older than the South Atlantic Ocean itself.

Heritage & meaning

Amethyst: a stone of royalty

For thousands of years amethyst has been worn by monarchs, bishops and collectors. A large geode brings that heritage into a room in its most dramatic, natural form.

The gem of kings

Purple has been the colour of royalty for millennia. A large amethyst sits beneath the cross of the Sovereign's Orb in the British Crown Jewels, and Catherine the Great of Russia was famed for her amethyst jewels.

A cardinal gem

For centuries amethyst was counted among the "cardinal gems", treasured alongside diamond, ruby, sapphire and emerald, until great deposits were found in South America in the 19th century.

The bishop's stone

Bishops traditionally wear amethyst rings, and the stone has long symbolised wisdom, piety and calm authority.

"Not intoxicated"

Its name comes from the Ancient Greek amethystos. The Greeks believed it kept the mind clear, and are said to have carved drinking cups from it.

A sanctuary stone

In crystal and feng shui traditions, an amethyst geode is placed to bring a calm, protective atmosphere to a home, and is linked with abundance and peace.
